Prevacid is the trade name for the drug lansoprazole and is indicated for the treatment of conditions associated with excess stomach acid such as heartburn, intestinal ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It belongs to a class of drugs known as proton pump inhibitors which work by decreasing the amount of acid in the stomach. Prevacid is available on prescription and over the counter. The OTC version is known as Prevacid 24HR. Prevacid is not suitable for some patients, such as those allergic to lansoprazole and people with phenylketonuria as some forms of Prevacid contain phenylalanine. Prilosec
Prilosec also known by its generic name, omeprazole, is an OTC medicine indicated for the treatment of heartburn and GERD. Like Prevacid, Prilosec is as proton pump inhibitor and reduces symptoms of heartburn and GERD by lowering stomach acid levels. Prilosec should not be used by patients who have had heartburn for more than three months. It should also be avoided by people experiencing nausea and vomiting and frequent chest pain. Prilosec may be associated with an increased risk of bone fracture; however, Drugs.com notes that this effect has mostly occurred only in people over 50 who have taken Prilosec long-term or at high doses.
Zegerid
Zegerid is another proton pump inhibitor indicated for the treatment of GERD. It combines the drugs omeprazole and the antacid, sodium bicarbonate. Zegerid may also be used to treat gastric ulcers and may provide relieve from heartburn symptoms. Zegerid comes in either 20mg or 40mg strengths and is available as a powder for oral suspension and in capsules. Side effects may include nausea, headache and constipation. In addition, as Zegerid contains omeprazole, bone fracture is a potential risk factor for patients taking Zegerid. Protonix
Protonix, also known by the generic name pantoprazole, decreases the production of stomach acid, providing relief from symptoms of heartburn symptoms of duodenal ulcers, heartburn, and GERD. It is supplied as delayed-release capsules or as delayed-release granules. Capsules should be swallowed whole with water, while granules can be dissolved in apple juice or apple sauce before swallowing. According to RxList,com, Protonix may hinder absorption of vitamin B12 so vitamin supplements may be necessary while taking Protonix.
