Although not really known as a health food, onions are actually very beneficial for both good health and weight loss. Onions are high in chromium, a mineral that helps to stabilize blood sugar levels. Onions have also been found to lower both cholesterol and blood pressure, and regular consumption can help reduce the risk of some kinds of cancer. Onions are also rich in fiber, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. They are easy to store and prepare in a variety of ways, and they can help you to lose weight.
Step 1
Have an omelette of egg whites, low fat cheese and chopped onions for breakfast. Eating breakfast, according to the Mayo Clinic, is one of the best ways to lose weight. Having a protein and onion-rich breakfast provides additional energy and fiber to fill your stomach, so you're less likely to snack. A cup of onions contains only 60 calories and provides nutrients that can keep you healthy while you lose weight.
Step 2
Have a salad of gourmet greens, pine nuts, seedless cucumber, broiled skinless chicken breast, light vinegrette dressing and shredded Vidalia onion for lunch. Vidalia onions have a milder flavor than white or red onions and are a perfect compliment to lean meats such as skinless chicken breast. A fresh green salad including onions will fill your stomach with fiber, helping your body to digest food and increasing your metabolism. The protein from the chicken will also keep you going with slow burning energy until dinner.
Step 3
Mix finely chopped white onion, canned plum tomatoes, and jalapeno peppers to taste in a blender or chopper. Add parsley or cilantro and mix until diced and mixed together. Use this low fat salsa as a dip for low fat tortilla chips. You can also bake fresh corn or flour tortillas on a cookie sheet in the oven at 350 degrees for about five minutes or until crisp. Cut or break them into wedges and put them in sealed containers to maintain freshness. Bring this low fat tasty snack with you for snacking at work. This is a great way to lower calories without feeling deprived.
Step 4
Have a bowl of low fat French onion soup for dinner, with a green salad and a half a whole-grain turkey sandwich. The recipes are in the Resources section. This is a fiber and nutrient rich way to end your day and fill your stomach so that you aren't inclined to snack after dinner. Save the other half of the sandwich for lunch the next day. This dinner is low in fat and calories, but you won't feel as if you're not eating enough since the fiber and protein will slow your digestion and keep you feeling full.
