Carrying extra weight on your waistline can be uncomfortable and unappealing. Infomercials, special pills, diets and gadgets won't bring the results you are looking for. There is no magic way to get a slim waist. It takes self-discipline with the proper foods and fitness routines.

Clean Diet

A clean diet is a direct reflection of your waistline. Unhealthy foods will cause the waistline to expand because of excess calories. In addition, many foods contain large amounts of sodium, causing the midsection to bloat. Eating a clean diet will help to whittle away the waistline. Choosing foods like fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains keep the stomach full and the body fueled.

Portion Control

Practicing portion control will keep your waistline under control. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that not only are portions sizes usually double the normal serving size, but studies have also shown that when offered larger portions, people inadvertently eat more. To keep you tummy tight, watch your portion sizes by reading food labels and splitting meals when out with friends.

Cardio

Cardio activity burns calories and can melt fat off your abs. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is recommended you do cardio activity five days a week for 30 minutes. Cardio can include running, power walking, swimming, biking and using cardio equipment.

Core Training

Training the core will keep the muscles tight. Core work is important to tone the abdominals and keep the trunk of the body strong. Exercises like the plank, bicycle twists and stability-ball crunches will work your core and draw in your abdominals. Vary your core training for maximum results.

Benefits

The benefits to having a slim waistline go beyond vanity. A slim waistline can reduce your risk for diabetes and heart disease, and it can lower your cholesterol.
