Lice can appear on a child's head as nits--the eggs that look like tan or yellow ovals the size of a grain of sand--nymphs or baby and adult lice. Head lice move quickly, which combined with their small size makes them hard to see, so after treatment it's imperative that you verify that all lice are out of your child's hair to prevent reinfestation.

Step 1

Watch your child for signs of continued infestation, such as head scratching, red bumps or sores on her head. She also might complain about feeling a tickle on her head.

Step 2

Part her hair into sections with a comb. Examine her head from one side to the other. Use a magnifying glass and flashlight to examine her scalp, nape and behind her ears for lice and nits. Examine individual hairs for nits, which usually are found stuck to the hair shaft.

Step 3

Wash her hair and apply a conditioner. Rinse out the conditioner. Run a fine-tooth comb through her hair. Examine the comb for lice and nits.

Things You'll Need
