Forming part of the 160-acre Wolf Lake State Recreation Area, Wolf Lake is a natural landmark located outside Chicago, Illinois. With activities such as fishing and picnicking also available at the site, you kayakers can have an active day on Wolf Lake.
Geography
Located between 120th and 134th streets on the southeast side of Chicago, Wolf Lake rests on the state boundary between Illinois and Indiana near Lake Michigan. Wolf Lake is divided by several dikes for the purpose of keeping the wave heights manageable for the small boats that use the lake. Due to its proximity to Lake Michigan, Wolf Lake's prevailing winds usually come from the larger lake.
Boats
In addition to kayaking, you can also enjoy sailing and boating with motors that operate under 10 horsepower. You should bring your own kayak or boat, as rentals aren't currently available for the lake as of August 2010.
Picnicking
Be sure to take advantage of picnicking areas around the lake. The main picnic spot is south of the park's main entrance. There are also tables and grills under shady trees around the lake and four shelters that must be reserved for use.
Fishing
You can go fishing from your kayak on Wolf Lake for a variety of species. Fishes found in the lake include largemouth bass, northern pike, bluegill, redear sunfish, crappie, bullhead catfish, carp and yellow perch. Bank fishermen can enjoy about six miles of shoreline. Catch your own fish and grill them for a healthy picnic meal.
Safety
According to the "Handbook of Illinois Boating Laws and Responsibilities," anyone in Illinois in a personal watercraft such as a kayak must wear a life jacket. According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, it's important to exercise caution when bringing small children to the lake; two children fell into a drop-off and drowned in 1998.
