Golf clubs get worn down over time because of the violent nature of swinging and striking a ball as well as the wear and tear clubs experience when they are transported. Refinishing golf clubs is cheaper than purchasing a new set. Refinishing involves making improvements to the shafts, club heads and grips.

Replacing the Shaft

Replacing the shaft of a golf club gives you a chance to redesign how your club bends during swings. That can lead to better distance on your shots and better scores. According to the Golf Galaxy website, you need to wear thick gloves and put heat on the hosel, where the club head connects with the shaft. Then twist the club head to the left, and it will come off. Reattach the club head to the new shaft by dipping the end of the shaft into epoxy and pressing the shaft tip into the hosel of the club head. Twist clockwise to secure the club head.

Replacing the Grips

Golf club grips can become worn after years of use, which can make your hands slip off the club during swings. After cutting off the old grip with a utility knife, scrape the shaft with solvent and a brush before covering that area with double-sided tape. Slide the new grip over the tape and let it sit for three hours to ensure the grip does not slip.

Repainting and Smoothing

Multiple swings will scratch the bottom of the club head because it hits dirt, grass and small pebbles. Repainting and smoothing the club head is a way to keep it looking new and performing better. Professional refinishers accomplish this by stripping off old chrome, then buffing out nicks before plating the club head in chrome and sandblasting the face.

Cleaning the Head

Lightly scrub dirty or rusted club heads with steel wool to give the club a shine like it had when you bought it. A cleaning solution can make this task easier. Use steel wool only with irons, though, as driver heads are made from wood or a composition of metals.
