American Chronicle notes that an acne scar will form just like any breakage or laceration to the skin will. PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyper) pigmentation is the process by which the body works on the scar tissue for up to 2 years after the skin damage. PIH rejuvenates collagen fibers and blood vessels, thereby helping the scar to fade.
There are two main types of acne scars. Raised scars, which are growths of tissues, are known as keloids. The sunken scars have names-- such as rolling, ice pick and boxcar--after the shapes of the indentations they create.
Step 1
Make an exfoliate paste in a dish by mixing 1 tbsp of baking soda with 2 tbsp of water. Cut lemon juice into halves and squeeze into a separate dish.
Step 2
Apply the baking soda paste to the acne scars. Gently massage the exfoliate into the scars in circular motions. Continue for several minutes before rinsing off. This acts like a home version of microderm abrasion, eroding the raised and depressed blemishes to even out the skin.
Step 3
Dab cotton ball in lemon juice. Apply generously to the acne scars. Massage in and then leave for 10 minutes before rinsing off. Lemon juice acts like a natural bleach and can help fade any dark scarring.
Step 4
Hold ice cubes, with a cloth if necessary, on the acne scars and rub gently in circular motions. Continue for 5 to 10 minutes. Ice cubes help shrink new scars by removing the swelling.
Step 5
Moisturize the skin with olive oil. Allow the scars to soak in the oil before removing the excess with a towel. The olive oil will seep deep into the skin and help soften and texturize.
Tips and Warnings
- These remedies can be performed in sequence or individually. Exfoliating the skin with baking soda and using lemon juice can cause irritation and dry out the skin, so moisturizing is recommended. Lemon juice can also make the skin more photo sensitive. Using a moisturizer with an SPF, sun protection factor, may therefore be advisable as an alternative to olive oil.
- Scarinfo notes that a scar will always be visible to some degree as hair follicles and sweat glands will not re-grow. It is advisable to consult a doctor before beginning any natural treatments. According to the Mayo Clinic, there is not enough evidence to support the total effectiveness of home remedies for acne treatment.
