Children seem to grow out of clothing and shoes before they even have a chance to properly wear them, which means that as a parent, you'll need to continually ensure that they have the right fit. Sizing children's shoes should be done on a regular basis, because shoes that are too small can impede your child's growth and development. Look for sturdy, solid shoes that keep your child's feet comfortable and supported so that she can run, jump and play.

Step 1

Place a piece of plain paper on the floor. Place your child's foot on the paper, and while he stands still, use the pencil to trace around the foot completely. Make sure that you are as accurate as possible because you'll use the measurement to size children's shoes when you go shopping.

Step 2

Measure the distance between the heel and the largest toe, and then subtract 5 mm or a fifth of an inch, says Dick's Sporting Goods. The number that you find will be the number of your child's shoe size.

Step 3

Bring the measurement with you to the shoe store. You should always have your child's foot measured by a professional to ensure that your results are accurate. Remember that your child will wear her shoes ever day, so they must have the right fit for maximum comfort. Have your child measured every time you purchase new shoes, since your child's feet are always growing.

Step 4

Place a pair of shoes on your child's feet according to the size that the retail associate has given you. Fasten them properly with the fasteners available, and then run your index finger around the top of the shoe, between the shoe and your child's foot. Ensure that you can fit an index finger all around the heel and the ankle so the shoes aren't too tight. If you can fit more than your index finger, they could be too loose.

Step 5

Ask your child to walk around the store a few times, suggests shopping expert on The Washington Post's website, Tania Anderson. Allow your child to wear the new shoes while you browse through the store for a few minutes. Then, ask how the shoes fit. Without testing them, your child won't know if the fastening is uncomfortable or the back rubs the wrong way. Sizing children's shoes is not an exact science because the shape of each foot is different,. Make sure you test a few different pairs and sizes before you settle on the right pair for your child.
