Golf Driver Instructions

Learning to hit the golf ball with your driver is one of the most important aspects of playing golf. Hitting your driver well can give you the ability to hit the ball for distance and accuracy off the tee and it can also set the tone for your round of golf. When you step up to the tee, grab your driver and strike it solidly on the first tee, you will have confidence that you can put a good round together.

Step 1

Address the ball squarely when you prepare to hit with your driver. Make sure your left shoulder--if you are a right-handed player--is facing the hole or the target on the fairway where you want to hit the ball. Your left foot should be underneath your left shoulder and your feet should be slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Flex your knees so you can transfer your weight easily during your swing.

Step 2

Tee the ball high when you are hitting with your driver. When you hit the ball off the tee with an iron or a lesser wood, you can tee the ball up about 1/4 inch. But when you hit with the driver, you must tee it up at least 3/4 inch. Use a special driver tee to make sure you tee it high enough. This is done because the driver must be hit with a sweeping swing to get maximum distance and get the ball up in the air.

Step 3

Slow down your backswing. One of the keys to distance in golf is club head speed at impact with the ball. A fast backswing will not help you achieve this. One of the goals during your backswing is to get all your weight and momentum on your back leg. Then your weight and momentum transfer forward during the downswing. Take your time during the backswing to assure that all your weight and momentum get on your back leg.

Step 4

Allow your hips to get through the hitting zone before bringing your hands to the ball if you want to hit the driver with maximum power. You are not swinging with just your arms and shoulders. You need to get your whole body involved in your swing, including your legs, hips and core muscles. Bring your hips through first and then your hands, arms and shoulders.

Step 5

Follow through fully in order to keep your drive online. The driver is the most difficult club to control. If you want to hit it straight, you must keep your eyes focused on the rear and center portion of the ball and you must bring your hands up to shoulder level. This will allow you to get maximum distance on your shot and keep it accurate.
