One of the things that can make or break a camping trip is the food. Building a camping pantry is a delicate balance, with freshness, variety and flavor on one side and weight on the other. Making smart and tasty choices while in the planning stages can ensure that everyone remains happy, energetic and healthy out on the trail.

Peanut Butter

No camping trip would be complete without a jar of peanut butter. Peanut butter is a good source of energy as well as protein. And it can be used in a variety of ways--straight from the jar or spread on tortillas for sandwiches.

Granola

There is a reason granola is often associated with camping and hiking. This healthful snack food provides carbohydrates for quick energy and protein for lasting power. Granola clusters mixed with nuts, dried fruit or even chocolate chips make for a hearty and appetizing snack.

Freeze-Dried Meals

Add some variety to your camping pantry without taking on a lot of extra weight by using freeze-dried foods. Provided you have access to a source of water for cooking and rehydration, freeze-dried meals can make up the bulk of your camping pantry for any given trip. Meals tend to be high in carbohydrates, which will provide plenty of energy for long hikes.

Spices

One thing that many campfire cooks overlook is bringing along some spices and seasonings. Salt and pepper are obvious choices, but taking a few lightweight plastic containers from your spice rack can make even the blandest dinner more palatable. Garlic and oregano are versatile choices, or you can pick up a spice blend and use it for multiple dishes.

Powdered Drinks

Even if you have a good source of water for your camping trip, it is not a bad idea to bring along some drink mixes to add some variety. Powdered milk can allow campers to have their morning cereal just like at home, and hot chocolate mix is always welcome on a cold night around the fire. Fruit drinks can be refreshing when hiking on a hot day. Don't be afraid to skip the sugar-free varieties, as you'll be burning plenty of energy walking the trails.

Canned Goods

Canned food can add to the weight of your camping pantry but can be a valuable addition to your meals. Canned beans are always a favorite, and tuna or ham can add protein to your daily meals to keep you going.
