Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention & Treatment

Alcohol and drug abuse, also known as substance abuse, is a challenging problem. An affected person typically becomes dependent on these substances and will take whatever steps necessary to obtain them. With a commitment to becoming sober and remaining sober, substance abuse can be prevented and treated effectively.

Significance

On the basic level, using drugs is illegal. Drug and alcohol abuse comes with a number of consequences. It affects a person's physical, mental and emotional health. In addition, it negatively impacts familial, academic and occupational functioning.

Prevention

According to the Mayo Clinic, the best method of prevention is to refrain from using drugs or alcohol all together. However, communication is key to identifying the consequences and effects of substance abuse. The Mayo Clinic advises parents to create an open dialogue with their children in discussing the risks and remaining open to hearing what their children have to say.

Treatment

Treatment is generally focused on decreasing the dependence on drugs and reducing the severity of withdrawal symptoms as the body learns to survive without the substances. According to the Mayo Clinic, counseling programs are commonly used to identify the reasons for the abuse and change the negative thoughts related to the abuse. Counseling, whether individual or in a group, may be implemented as a part of a treatment program. Medications may be prescribed to treat dependence, depending on the type of substance abuse being treated.
