The city of Boston has an average yearly temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the summer months can become warm and snow can be expected in the winter months, but no matter what the time of year, Boston has many activities for everyone. There are family-based activities, celebrations and parks, as well as daily and evening activities for individuals and couples. Many museums, parks and centers offer special events, and there are many friendly five-star hotels and restaurants to experience and enjoy.

Geography

The Boston area covers 48 square miles and is elevated between 15 and 29 feet above sea level. It's the capital of Massachusetts, and is located on the Shawmut Peninsula between the Charles River and the Mystic River. Boston has its own harbor, which has several of Boston's small islands close by.

History

Boston was known as Shawmut until it was renamed in 1630. The city is filled with history as it was once the primary port of North America and was the site of the Boston Tea Party in 1773. Boston is home to the Massachusetts New State House, to silversmith Paul Revere's house--which is also the oldest standing house in downtown Boston, to the Bunker Hill Monument--which commemorates the Battle of Bunker Hill, as well as the Boston Tea Party Museum, the Massachusetts Archives and Commonwealth Museum and so much more.

Free Activities in Boston

There are many free things to do in Boston, including activities like free wine tasting at Best Cellars on weekdays between 5-8pm, visiting the Massachusetts Historical Society and viewing historical artifacts, taking a 2.5 mile walk down the Boston Freedom Trail, becoming an art connoisseur at The Institute for Contemporary Art at the Haymarket or going stargazing at the Coit Observatory at Boston University on Wednesdays from 8:30pm. There are many choices to choose from in Boston, especially during the summer months.

Museums and Tours

There are more than just a handful of places to visit in Boston, including many Museums and several tours. Boston offers the 2-Day Beantown Trolley Pass. The 2-Day Beantown Trolley Pass is a tour bus that travels around Boston hot spots and the traveller can get on and off the Beantown Tour bus at any stop they like for up to two days, with a purchased ticket. There is also The Boston Duck Tours, Boston Movie Mile Walking Tour, The Fenway Park Tour which is the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball and many other tours to enjoy. The Museums in Boston cover history, art, entertainment and old world religions and offers a great insight into Boston and it's ancestries.

Statistics

Seventy three percent of Boston hotels were occupied during 2009 and the average daily rate for a hotel room during 2009 was $189.29. Also during this same year there were 11.4 million visitors who visited Bostons top attractions and museums.
