There are many summer camps across the Lone Star State, and most offer horseback riding as an activity. However, there are some camps that stand out from the rest. Some have unique facilities, others have original methods, but all will practically guarantee a great time and a lot of fun, physical activity that encourages campers to work young, developing muscles and stretch growing limbs and imaginations.
Fort Worth
Camp Carter YMCA in Fort Worth offers several options for young people. The resident camps are held for one or two week periods and cater to youth aged 6 to16. Day camps are held throughout the summer for kids ages 6 through 12, and educational and recreational equestrian programs are offered for adults and youth. Campers can challenge themselves on the archery range, improve their marksmanship with rifle practice, go hiking, canoeing swimming, horseback riding or engage in some team sports. Trinity
Camp Olympia is an overnight camp for youth ages 7 to 16, situated on the shores of Lake Livingston in Trinity, Texas. Horseback riding and advanced horseback riding activities are designed to accommodate individual skill levels, with advanced riders encouraged to take part in the camp's rodeo activities, including barrel racing. Vanderpool
Lonehollow, an adventure camp for kids age 7 to 16 years old, is located on 3,000 acres of mountains, spring-fed lakes and groomed lawns near San Antonio. Resident camps are divided into two terms over one month. Lonehollow also offers weekend family camps. Historic cabins feature river rock and raw timber, and a plethora of available activities keep campers busy and active, including rock climbing, mountain biking, swimming, sailing or a ride on the zip-line, just to name a few. In addition to regular horseback riding, Lonehollow has developed the Parelli Method, a specialized method of horse training based on horses' natural instincts. Marble Falls
Camp Champions in Marble Falls is an overnight camp within easy driving distance from both San Antonio and Austin. The camp has large facilities based on ancient Roman design. Hunt
There are two non-denominational, faith-based Vista camps near Hunt, Texas. Rio Vista for boys and Rio Sierra for girls are smaller camps, and both cater to youth ages 6 to 16. There are two- and four-week programs available, and each camper chooses 10 activities from the more 40 available. Horseback riding and swimming are assigned according to skill level.
