According to Medline Plus, painless swelling of the feet and ankles is a common problem. This is particularly true among the older population. Due to the effects of gravity, swelling is particularly noticeable in the lower extremities. You can treat swelling in several ways, but it is important to consult with a medical professional to determine the cause before you begin treatment.
Elevate
The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics recommends elevating the ankle 12 inches above the heart. This can be done while lying down and propping your foot atop several pillows. To prevent the foot from sliding off this bolster at night, the end of the mattress can be elevated by placing books between the mattress and the box spring.
Compress
Wrapping the affected area with an elastic bandage, or wearing support stockings can help reduce ankle swelling. The bandage should not be so tight as to cause the ankle to hurt or throb. The toes should remain pink and not tingle. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics recommends removing the bandage every four hours and reapplying.
Exercise
The skeletal muscle pump occurs when contractions of the leg muscles and the gluteals pump venous blood back toward the heart. Exercise creates these muscle contractions and can thereby reduce swelling in the ankle.
Diet
According to The University of Maryland Medical Center, a low-salt diet may reduce fluid retention and swelling.
