Bags under the eyes accumulate for a number of reasons, but according to MayoClinic.com, they become more common as you age. The flesh and muscles that support your eyelids become weak, and fat deposits in the area. Fluid retention will also cause inflammation under the lower lids. Dark pigmentation enhances as the tissue becomes distended. For some, dark, puffy circles simply run in the family. The condition rarely indicates a serious health problem, but it can look unsightly. Some lifestyle changes and a basic home remedy will help you lose that puffy look.

Step 1

Put an extra pillow on the bed so you can sleep with your head propped up. This will keep fluid from accumulating under your eyes. Get seven to eight hours of sleep most nights.

Step 2

Dip two black tea bags into a cup of hot water first thing in the morning. Let the tea steep for two or three minutes. Remove the bags and press on the sides to drain excess moisture.

Step 3

Set the tea bags on a plate and put the plate in the refrigerator until cool.

Step 4

Lie down for 10 minutes with one tea bag on each closed eye. The University of Maryland Heath Center reports that tannins in black tea acts as an astringent to reduce inflammation. The cold, wet compress from the bags will also help with the swelling.

Step 5

Remove and discard the bags after 10 minutes. Wash your face with cool water.

Tips and Warnings

  • Eat less salt to reduce fluid retention, which may be causing puffy eyes.
  • If the swollen area is sore or accompanied by a rash, see the doctor for evaluation. This may be a skin condition that requires medical treatment.
