How to Make an Ice Pack Using Alcohol

Using ice packs can decrease swelling, bruising, pain and muscle spasms after an injury. The American Academy of Family Physicians suggests that injured individuals should ideally use ice on their injuries for approximately three days after the injury occurs. People who do not want to spend a lot of money on purchasing an ice pack should consider making one at home. By using a mixture of alcohol and water, they can create ice packs that will easily conform to the shape of the injured body part.

Step 1

Obtain a box of plastic freezer bags. Take two of the bags out of the box, then place one inside of the other. This double-bagging will help prevent leakage.

Step 2

Mix 2 parts water to 1 part rubbing alcohol together in a bowl. Since alcohol does not freeze, adding more alcohol to the mixture will yield a "slushier" ice pack, suggests Education.com.

Step 3

Pour the mixture into the plastic freezer bag. Squeeze excess air out of the bag to avoid bursting when the water freezes. Seal the bag and place it in the freezer.

Step 4

Freeze the ice pack for a couple hours to achieve the desired coldness. Remember that the ice pack will not turn to a hard solid, but will remain flexible due to the alcohol in the mixture.

Step 5

Use the ice pack when necessary. Place a towel on the skin before applying the ice pack.

Tips and Warnings

  • Other forms of alcohol and liquid dish detergent may be substituted for rubbing alcohol.
  • Keep the ice pack out of the reach of children and pets.
