Birmingham offers the equestrian ample opportunity to explore the wooded Appalachian foothills of central Alabama. An afternoon on horseback, winding down a leisurely trail or cantering over a jump course, is a workout and a new way to explore the outdoors. The President's Council on Physical Fitness says that horseback riding at a trot burns 246 calories an hour, so traversing the valleys around Birmingham in the saddle offers a healthy workout and the chance to experience the natural beauty of Alabama.

Guided Trail Riding

The forested valleys and open heights around Birmingham can be explored on horseback. Although few stables rent horses for trail riding, many offer guided trail rides. From a one-hour, low-speed amble for beginning riders to an all-out gallop of a riding workout, riders can find a trail-riding stable to suit every need. Some trail-riding stables also offer overnight cabin or bunkhouse accommodations for longer visits. Because most riding facilities are located outside the city, expect a short drive into the countryside to find a trail riding stable.

Oak Mountain State Park

Riders with their own horses can explore the bridle trails in nearby Oak Mountain State Park, but even those without a mount can enjoy these trails. The park, about 15 miles south of Birmingham, offers guided trail rides and pony rides on its 10 miles of wooded trails. The park stables also offers short- and long-term boarding and riding lessons.

English Riding Lessons

For riders eager to experience the finesse of dressage or the excitement of jumping, many stables around Birmingham offer English-style riding lessons. The Birmingham Dressage and Combined Training Association sponsors shows and clinics, and maintains a list of reputable trainers in the area for students wanting English riding lessons.

Western Riding Lessons

Beginning and experienced cowboys alike will find many private stables offering Western riding lessons around Birmingham. The Alabama Quarter Horse Association sponsors shows with Western classes throughout the state and provides guidance for riders looking to further their Western riding education. Beginning riders should look for a lesson stable that has well-trained school horses to ensure a safe introduction to Western riding.

Horse Boarding

Riders with their own horses can find numerous privately owned stables that provide boarding. Some offer every amenity, with elaborate facilities and full care, while others are more basic, requiring the owner to do much of the horse care work. Because of central Alabama's warm climate, an indoor arena is not usually necessary for winter riding but can provide relief from the heat during the summer. Horse owners should consider their riding needs and commuting times from central Birmingham when evaluating boarding facilities.
