Imparting different types of spin to a ping pong ball can make it behave in a variety of ways. Backspin will make the ball seem to resist gravity and float a great distance; topspin will make the ball dive quickly toward the table surface; and side-spin will make the ball curve left or right along its flight path. Curving the ball is a great way to confuse your opponent; to do it, you need to learn to hit the ball in a particular way.

Step 1

Wait for an opportunity to return a flatly hit ball; that is, a ball with no spin on it. If you are serving, toss the ball without spinning it. You will find it much easier to influence the spin of the ball if it does not already have spin on it.

Step 2

Position the paddle to side of the ball's flight path as opposed to drawing the paddle back as you normally would. Wait for the moment just before the ball crosses the plane of the paddle.

Step 3

Slice the paddle in a direction perpendicular to the ball's flight path and parallel to the surface of the table or floor. Time this so the ball strikes the paddle in mid-slice. The paddle will impart side-spin to the ball and it will curve in the opposite direction of your swing as it flies to the other side of the table.
