When decorating your child's nursery, you were decorating for what you thought your child would be like. Now that your child has reached the toddler years, you may be more aware of her likes and dislikes. In order to update her room to add her new "grown-up girl" bed, you may wish to add some decorative touches. Because your toddler is still a growing girl, choose a theme that can grow with her so you will have to make fewer changes as she gets older.
Step 1
Select a theme for the room. A theme can help determine paint or wallpaper colors and decorations. The theme can be as simple as selecting two colors or it can be focused on an animal, a storybook character or even polka dots, according to the Better Homes and Gardens website.
Step 2
Select a paint color that is in accordance with the theme. My Interior Decorator recommends selecting two coordinating colors. Make one paint selection a semi-gloss paint, which makes a toddler's hand prints and occasional drawings easier to remove. Paint the top portion a satin finish, which can provide a nice contrast. Make sure you paint at a height that is out of your toddler's reach.
Step 3
Move the major pieces of furniture into the room. This can include a bed, dresser, vanity, bookshelf and chair. Evaluate the remaining wall and floor space for decorative purposes.
Step 4
Purchase a comforter or other bed linens that go along with the theme. It can make a bright, splashy impact in the room. Bed linens are easier to change than wall colors, so they can mirror your daughter's current favorite colors and interests, whether ponies or princesses.
Step 5
Purchase fabric to hang as curtains or other window treatments. Colorful bedsheets are easy to use for curtains.
Step 6
Add decorative touches, such as colorful pillows, pictures or posters and area rugs, according to Rafter Tales. Girls also love to have a mirror somewhere in the bedroom. Placing it over a low dresser is convenient and attractive.
Step 7
Create an area for storing her toys and books. Purchasing simple canvas bins and decorating them with paint pens or ribbon can incorporate the theme. Having plenty of storage can help your child learn the importance of keeping a room organized.
