More than just an occasional feeling of sadness, clinical depression is characterized by chronic sadness along with loss of interest in daily activities, and often accompanied by problems sleeping, weight gain or weight loss and even suicidal thoughts. While conventional treatment includes counseling as well as medication, natural treatment methods are also available. It is important to remember that natural therapies, such as herbs and meditation, should be used in conjunction with, and not in place of medical care.
Types
The natural methods of treating depression involve a holistic approach, meaning they address the whole person, not just a particular set of symptoms. Natural healthcare practitioners may employ any number of therapies, including dietary changes, meditation and relaxation techniques, as well as herbs and other natural supplements. Each of these may address different aspects of depression. Meditation, for example, is used to help promote relaxation, and overcome anxiety and stress. In one study found in Oxford Journals, TM, a form of meditation, was found to not only help reduce anxiety levels, but help return brain function to normal following post-traumatic stress disorder.
Considerations
One of the most fundamental natural treatments available, that works well with both holistic and conventional medicine is diet modification. Simple changes such as consuming a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals may be recommended. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils may also help reduce the symptoms of depression. Although it does warn that high doses may increase the risk of bleeding and should not be taken with blood thinners, such as Coumadin.
Expert Insight
Because natural medicine is gaining more recognition, herbal remedies are being studied for a variety of health-related issues. Perhaps no herb has been studied more in the treatment of depression than St. John's wort. A flowering plant native to Europe, Africa and Asia, St. John's wort is used by herbalists to treat several types of depression, including major depression and bipolar disorder. The University of Maryland cites several studies which show the herb to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression, and even suggest that it may be as effective as certain prescription medications. Herbs and other natural supplements should only be used under the care of a healthcare professional.
Time Frame
As with any treatment method, patience is often required to see the full effects of natural medicine. Whether trying meditation, dietary supplements or herbs, it may take anywhere from four to six weeks to see significant benefits. In a review of several studies by Elizabeth Baird of Vanderbilt University, it is pointed out that most studies of the popular supplement 5-HTP were conducted for at least six weeks. The 5-HTP in particular is used to help regulate hormone levels, which effect mood and sleep cycles. It may take up to six weeks before these changes happen.
Warning
Natural treatments for depression are still undergoing scientific study. And though simple holistic methods such as proper diet, meditation and relaxation are generally accepted and do not cause harmful side effects, certain herbs and natural supplements may interfere with or even be dangerous when taken with prescription drugs. It is important to consult a medical doctor before trying herbs or other natural supplements.
