Vancouver is a city rich in activities for its youth. The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation offers many activities and programs designed for any age youth. From swimming to skateboarding and many others in between, this city has something for you to do whether you are a child, tween or teen.
Lifeguard Training
Older youths who are looking for a good summer job may enjoy taking lifeguard training classes. Lifeguards are hired seasonally for local indoor and outdoor pools in the Vancouver area and all lifeguards need to hold current National Lifeguard certification, current C.P.R. Basic Rescuer certification and a recognized First Aid certificate (i.e. Aquatic Emergency Care, Standard First Aid or Occupational First Aid), according to the Parks and Recreation website. In addition, only Canadian qualifications are accepted. If you wish to work beaches, you must hold a N.L.S. Waterfront certificate.
Skateboard Parks
Skateboarders will delight in the fact that Vancouver has seven skateboard parks in the city. Each park offers something different and there is something for everyone from the beginner skateboarder to the most advanced. Coopers' Park, for example, has two skate benches, grind rail and other features that have been added to make the park more skate-friendly. The Downtown Skateboard Plaza is one of the most popular skateboard parks because it is one of the first kind in all of North America.
Dancing
If dancing interests you, then Vancouver has a variety of dance programs available for you to try. Acrobatic dance classes are available for ages 5 to 9 years old and teaches the fundamentals of dance with rhythm and gymnastics. Also try aerial dance classes, belly dancing, ballet, ballroom dance, breakdancing and more. The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation offers almost every kind of dance you can think of. You can register for these or other dance classes on its website.
Outdoor Sports
Enjoy the outdoors with sports for youth in Vancouver. An outdoor sport can be found for almost every interest from tennis to golf and even power boating. Hockey is a popular sport in the area offered too. Outdoor sports are seasonal and can be found on the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation website.
Swimming
Kids of all ages can learn to swim for the first time. If you are a youth and are looking for swimming lessons, there are lessons for all ages through Vancouver's Board of Parks and Recreation. You will not be alone as there are classes for children ages 4 all the way up to 64. Swimming is a fundamental (and fun) activity for which you are never too old. The low-impact activity makes it an ideal activity for those who have injuries or do not enjoy high-intensity recreation and sports.
