Even if you have had silky smooth hair your entire life, it does not necessarily mean that the grey hair coming in will have the same characteristics. In fact, grey hair often tends to be wiry, course and difficult to manage. Grey hair may also lack moisture, which can make it appear dull and lifeless. Proper conditioning can coat the cuticle, making grey hair less unruly and more like the hair you were born with.

Step 1

Shampoo your hair with a moisturizing shampoo. CareFair.com recommends choosing a shampoo specifically designed for grey hair to help keep the texture of your hair "soft and manageable." CareFair.com also advises avoiding shampoos that come in bright colors as they may stain your grey hair. Apply a quarter-sized amount of moisturizing shampoo to damp hair. Massage the shampoo into your scalp, and follow with a warm water rinse.

Step 2

Apply a moisturizing conditioner to your hair. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount into your palm, and massage it into your hair and scalp. Leave the conditioner on for three to five minutes. Rinse away the conditioner with cool water.

Step 3

Treat your grey hair to a deep conditioning treatment such as a hot oil treatment at least once a month or as often as once a week, says CareFair.com. Apply the deep conditioner to your damp hair, massaging it into your scalp and hair. Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap, and leave the deep conditioner on your hair for 30 minutes. Remove the deep conditioner with a cool water rinse.

Step 4

Avoid heat appliances when possible, as their overuse will dry out your hair even more, notes GrayHairstyle.com.

Tips and Warnings

  • Because grey hair has so little pigment, it is susceptible to yellowing. Washing your hair with a moisturizing violet shampoo can help alleviate this problem. Violet shampoos sell in grocery stores and beauty supply chains.
  • Do not over wash grey hair. Over washing can rob your scalp and hair of moisture. Wash your hair once instead of twice. If your grey hair is dry and you wash it every day, switch to every other day, instead.
