Seattle is an ideal spot for any couple looking to spend time together while also keeping active in and around the city. Seattle is situated in the heart of mountains, lakes and rivers that offer a wealth of activities in addition to traditional urban sightseeing. As the northernmost state in the country, Washington has a cool climate that is conducive to fresh water, comfortable temperatures and clean, crisp air.
Walking Tour
Enjoy a walk along the Seattle waterfront, which can lead you from the antique shops and historic architecture of Pioneer Square to Pike Place Market; here you can explore shops offering fresh seafood, handmade cheese and local art. A coffee crawl exposes visitors to the best coffee Seattle has to offer, while wine tours offer a taste of Seattle's wines as well as visits to Washington state vineyards and wineries. Small wineries are scattered throughout the city of Seattle, and you can expand your tour to include the Leavenworth and Wenatchee area of the Columbia Cascade wine region, as well as the Upper Yakima Valley. A walking tour allows you and your partner to see the sights at your own pace and enjoy time together while you burn off the calories from wine tasting.
Climbing the Space Needle
The top of the Seattle Space Needle features a full-service restaurant and observation deck with panoramic views. According to spaceneedle.com, the Space Needle has been named "Best Place to Get Engaged," and the SkyCity Restaurant has been named "Best Restaurant with a View" by AOL Cityguide. The Space Needle elevators carry as many as 25 people to the top in a matter of minutes, but you and your partner can work up an appetite and burn massive calories by taking the stairs. In all, there are 848 steps from the bottom of the basement to the observation deck. Take it at a slow and steady pace, or race each other to see who can make it up first.
Sailing
If you are a couple who enjoys sailing, Seattle is a great place to bring or rent a boat for sailing around the coast of Puget Sound to Lake Washington or Lake Union. Even if you have never sailed before, you can join the Seattle Sailing Club or sign up with a charter sailing company. Learn the basics of sailing and get a workout for your whole body as you hoist and lower sails, adjust the boom and steer the boat.
Canoeing and Kayaking
Along with other water sports, canoeing and kayaking are popular activities in and around the Seattle area. Rent a canoe or kayak and enjoy pleasant conversation as you work your biceps paddling across Lake Union or Lake Washington. If you are a couple looking for a little more adventure and an increased activity level, try battling it out with each other upstream in side-by-side kayaks, or take a whitewater raft on the Wenatchee, Tieton, Skykomish or Skagit rivers outside of Leavenworth and Seattle. Intense kayaking or whitewater rafting can provide a substantial upper body workout along with aerobic activity.
Hiking
For an aerobic workout and muscle toning to the lower half of your body, schedule a couple's hike. The Seattle area is brimming with hiking spots, from casual strolls through wooded parks to the hiking trails on Puget Sound all the way to steep inclines up Mount Rainier. Spend some time planning the hiking route on a map together, and take time to discuss the length of the hike so both you and your partner get just the right amount of exertion.
