Information & Cost of Lap Band Surgery

Laparoscopic gastric banding is a form of weight loss surgery. Designed for patients who are very overweight, it allows people who are otherwise unable to lose weight to achieve a more healthy size.

Mechanism

In laparoscopic gastric banding, a band is surgically placed around the stomach. This band divides the stomach into two sections: a smaller top section that holds food, and a larger bottom section that helps connect the top portion of the stomach to the intestines.

Results

Laparoscopic gastric banding typically results in a loss of between 45 and 75 percent of the patient's extra weight two years after the operation, Up To Date reports. The success of the surgery depends in large part on the ability of the patient to follow a dietary plan and go to all follow-up visits.

Cost

The cost of laparoscopic gastric banding can vary depending on the patient's location, choice of hospital and health insurance plan. As a rule of thumb, the ceiling for these procedures is $30,000, Bariatric Surgery Specialists explains.
