Louisiana's Gulf coast region is a major source of the blue crab, where they can be found in fresh lakes, such as Lake Pontchartrain, as well as the coastal salt water. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries monitors stocks of the crab to ensure it is not overfished. Recreational and commercial fishers need a license from the department.

Crab Trap Licences

To catch a lot of blue crabs you need a crab trap. For recreational crabbing you need a basic fishing and saltwater license and a crab trap license. One person can put out up to 10 traps at a time. The Department dictates the measurements for the crab trap and where they can be placed. Those folks trying to catch a few crabs with a line or net only need a basic license.

Crab Catch Restrictions

As of 2014, recreational fishermen can't catch more than 12 dozen crabs per day. Furthermore, although the Louisiana blue crab reproduces frequently, to maintain high stock levels you must throw back any female crabs carrying eggs.
