Many board-sport enthusiasts skateboard in the summer and snowboard in the winter. According to the website ABC-of-Snowboarding, skateboarders of the 1950s used self-made snowboards to transfer their skills to the snow. To follow in the tradition of the snowboard pioneers, you can use one of your old skateboards and a pair of snowboard bindings to make a skateboard into a snowboard.
Step 1
Remove the trucks, wheels and risers from your skateboard. Use a screwdriver and a wrench. Save the eight bolts and nuts that hold the trucks to the skate deck.
Step 2
Place your snowboard bindings on top of the skate deck. Stand in the bindings to ensure the proper stance width. Insert a pencil through four holes in the base plate of each binding and mark their position on top of the skate deck.
Step 3
Drill holes through the eight points you've just marked. Choose a drill bit matching the size of the bolts from the skateboard. Wear your safety glasses.
Step 4
Join the snowboard bindings to the skate deck. Insert the bolts from the bottom of the deck and inlay the bolt heads. The threaded end of the bolts will pass through the holes in the base plates.
Step 5
Adjust the bindings to your preferred stance angle. A 15-degree duck-foot stance is common.
Step 6
Attach the nuts to the bolts to secure the snowboard bindings. Use a screwdriver and a wrench.
Step 7
Cut the threaded end of the bolts flush with the nuts. Use a bolt cutter, and wear your safety glasses.
Tips and Warnings
- A skateboard with an upturned nose and tail is best for building a snowboard.
- When drilling the holes in the skate deck, keep your fingers away from the rotating drill chuck and bit.
