Concrete might seem hard and durable, but its porous nature means it can easily become stained and dirty. Refresh the appearance of your floors, driveway, sidewalks and other concrete surfaces by cleaning them. Many cleaning solutions and industrial cleaning chemicals are toxic and dangerous to your health and the environment, warns Keene State College. Instead, try a green cleaning product, which is often safer for you and also helps protect the environment from pollution runoff.

Simple Green Concrete & Driveway Cleaner

Despite its name, Simple Green's concrete cleaner isn't green but purple. It's designed to help lift away dirt, oil and stains without corroding your concrete surface with harsh, acidic detergents. The cleaner is also nontoxic and biodegradable. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that it's safe and won't cause excessive irritation if your skin is exposed to it.

Bio-Dry

Bio-Dry makes a dry concrete cleaner product that bears the same name. Unlike many cleaners, it doesn't require water, thus making for a potentially less messy cleaning process. According to the manufacturer, the biodegradable cleaner works in two ways. First, the powders help to absorb oil and grease. Then, micro-organisms in the powder help digest and eat away oils or chemicals that are staining your concrete. The microbes turn any such substances into nontoxic carbon dioxide, fatty acids or water.

Green Earth Technologies Concrete Cleaner & Degreaser

Green Earth Technologies' concrete cleaner comes in pouches that are designed to be used with a pressure washer to enhance the washer's cleaning power. The pouch's contents help loosen contaminants on your concrete's surface. The cleaner is biodegradable. Its packaging is also made with 25 percent to 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic marked with recycled paper.

Eco-Green Concrete Cleaner

This environmentally friendly concrete cleanser made by Daimer Industries has nano-particle detergents--the detergent particles are made extra small, with the manufacturer saying they measure less than 1/80,000 the thickness of your hair shaft. Their size helps the cleaner penetrate deeper into the surface of your concrete. The biodegradable cleaner is formulated from plant extracts and is safe enough for use indoors.
