Impex Kayaks designed the Assateague touring kayak for larger to extra large paddlers. It fits them by increasing the cockpit instead of the midship size. This provides a snug fit for controllability.
Specifications
The Assateague measures 17 feet 10 inches long and 22.5 inches wide. It is 13.75 inches deep. The cockpit runs 32 inches long by 17 inches wide. The long length and extra width of the cockpit makes it easy for larger paddlers to enter. In the standard glass layup, the Assateague weighs 59 pounds. Suggested paddler weight is 175 to 275 pounds.
Features
Standard features include three hatches to access watertight storage areas, a skeg and an adjustable seating system, which includes an Immersion Research back band and seat pad, adjustable footrests and thigh hooks. The kayak offers both rescue handles and separate carry handles. Impex outfits the deck with reflective lines and plenty of bungee. If you want to add a 70P-style compass, there's a built-in compass recess designed for it.
Hull Design
The Assateague's Greenland-style hull features a shallow "V" that provides both greater primary and directional stability. The hull's increased rocker enhances maneuverability when the boat is held on an edge. A medium chine allows the kayak to be held on its edge without the worry of the abrupt transition hard chines have.
