New York City is truly the city that walks. You and your date will find plenty to do just outside your door or maybe a few subway stops away, and if you have a wide range of interests, there will be so much to discover. Get outside no matter what the season and experience the energy and vitality of New York City. From world-class dining to carriage rides in the park, romance in this urban destination is alive and well.
A Date and a Dog
Spending a day with your dog and a date is a great way to get to know someone. Taking your canine companion to one of the dog parks or dog runs gives plenty of conversation time and important "getting to know you" time. Riverside Park, which runs from 68th Street to 155th Street, has three dog runs inside the park allowing your pet plenty of room to run.
Carriage Ride in Central Park
Romance and a carriage ride through Central Park go hand in hand. It's a terrific way to view the park, riding slowly and allowing you time to relax and take in the sights. On your carriage ride, your driver will take you by the Wollman Rink, the Central Park Zoo and the Carousel. The safety of the horse is always considered; rides are not offered in extreme weather conditions. Late night rides can be enjoyed till 2 a.m., making this a sublime way to spend a few hours after dinner. You will not need to reserve your ride: however, it is possible to make prior arrangements, which will involve additional costs.
Flea Markets and Farmers Markets
Strolling past the numerous booths at flea markets allows time for conversation, a casual place to eat and learning about someone else's style and taste. The Upper West Side hosts Green Flea each weekend in the summer. It is located in a neighborhood filled with upscale restaurants. Serious flea market shoppers enjoy exploring the Garage--named because of its garage location. It opens in the early hours of the morning and by the time you are finished shopping, it's time for breakfast. Many of the flea markets run farmers markets as well, providing an opportunity to do some shopping together while planning a meal featuring fresh fruits and vegetables.
Walking Tours
Since New York City is such a walking city, a memorable date should include a walking tour. Your tour might include sites such as the dramatic Brooklyn Bridge, or Chinatown with its colorful mix of Asian diversity. Investigate the Gay and Lesbian History Tour, or take a stroll through Greenwich Village and hear stories about the famous artists and writers who once lived in this now very fashionable neighborhood.
Concerts in the Park
Music in the park is part of the New York City culture. Bring a blanket and a picnic lunch or dinner and enjoy many of the outdoor concerts that operate throughout the city in warm-weather months. Many of the concerts are free and take place in locations like Union Square Park and the South Street Seaport at Pier 17. Central Park--the city's landmark park--presents summer concerts from both the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera.
