Shaving the genital or pubic area can cause red bumps to appear if not done properly. Ingrown hairs, an infection of the hair follicle known as folliculitis and razor burn can all occur leaving unsightly and painful red bumps behind. If red bumps do appear and do not go away after several days, or if they become swollen or have discharge, seek medical attention immediately.

Step 1

Trim the hair in the genital area using a pair of sharp scissors until it is as close to the skin as possible. The Palo Alto Medical Foundation explains that trimming first with scissors will lessen irritation and allow for a more effective shave. Be careful when using the scissors to avoid cutting yourself.

Step 2

Soak the area in warm water by sitting in a bathtub or by taking a hot shower. Go Ask Alice notes that the warm water helps to soften the skin and the hair, allowing for a closer shave and decreasing the chance of irritation to the skin.

Step 3

Smooth shaving cream onto the genital area. Shaving creams are available targeted toward men and women and toward different skin types as well. Choose the appropriate shaving cream for your body and apply a thick layer. Allow the cream to sit for two to three minutes to further soften the skin and hair for an easier shave.

Step 4

Pull the skin tight and use a good quality razor to shave in the direction of hair growth. Shaving against the hair growth can cause irritation and lead to bumps.

Step 5

Rinse the area with warm water, removing all traces of shaving cream.

Step 6

Apply baby oil or aloe vera gel to the freshly shaved skin to soothe and moisturize the area and help prevent red bumps from appearing. Reapply daily for continued moisturization.
