Made from mineral oil, baby oil is lightly fragranced and capable of forming a protective barrier between the skin and external environment. If you have dry hair and scalp, a warm baby oil massage can help add replenish moisture. Done incorrectly, the baby oil will coat your individual hair strands and repel any water used to wash it away. This can leave you with an oily mess that may linger for days, making it almost impossible to style your hair.

Step 1

Apply baby oil to your hair when it is dry, not wet. Allow the baby oil to sit on your hair and scalp for 15 to 30 minutes while it penetrates.

Step 2

Squeeze a quarter-sized amount of shampoo to the palm of your hand. Massage the shampoo into your hair and scalp before applying water. This will help to break the bond between the baby oil and your hair, allowing water to penetrate.

Step 3

Rinse the shampoo and baby oil from your hair using warm water. Repeat the shampooing process to remove any leftover baby oil residues. Follow-up with a cool water rinse.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have made the mistake of applying baby oil to your hair when wet, massage a quarter-sized amount of liquid dish soap to your hair. Rinse your hair with warm water and repeat the washing process with the dish soap. Continue washing with the dish soap and rinsing until the baby oil releases from your hair.
  • Do not rinse your hair without massaging the shampoo into your hair and scalp first. Doing so will cause the water to bead up on the baby oil, inhibiting its removal. You must work the shampoo into your hair first to break the bond.
