If your hair has been looking drab and limp, it might need a pick-me-up. While you might think your hair is not naturally beautiful, your unimpressive mane might be the result of how you are treating it. Limp, lifeless hair can be caused by heat damage, over-styling, a vitamin deficiency and neglect. Talk with your doctor about treating your hair at home to get shiny, healthy locks.

Step 1

Brush your hair with a boar-bristle hairbrush, says Didi Gluck in the article "Healthy Hair 101" in "Marie Claire." Boar bristles spread the oils in your scalp evenly over your hair, all the way to the ends, which will make hair soft and shiny.

Step 2

Mix two parts warm water and one part apple cider vinegar in a bowl, then pour the mixture over your head right after getting into the shower. Let the mixture sit on your hair for a few minutes, then shampoo and condition normally. Apple cider will balance the pH of your hair, making it shiny and healthy.

Step 3

Eat 3.5 oz. of lean beef twice a week to improve your hair's consistency. Beef contains protein, zinc, B vitamins and iron to keep hair healthy, says Brian Thompson, principal trichologist at the Philip Kingsley Trichological Centre in New York, in the article "6 Superfoods for Healthy Hair" in "Ladies' Home Journal."

Step 4

Take a 250-mg capsule of flaxseed oil three times a day to restore your hair's natural moisture. Flaxseed oil will make dry, damaged hair shiny and lustrous.

Step 5

Eat salmon twice a week. Salmon contains omega-3 fatty acids, which keep hair healthy and shiny, says nutritionist Oz Garcia in "Marie Claire."
