Contact lenses are able to treat a variety of eye problems by compensating for deficiencies in the eyes ability to focus light. Aspheric contact lenses are a special variety of contact lens that has somewhat different properties compared to standard contact lenses.

Identification

In general, contact lenses are a perfect hemisphere, which means that they refocus light equally from all angles. Aspheric contact lenses, however, are not completely spherical, which means that the power of the lens, also known as the prescription, is not uniform.

Properties

Aspheric contact lens are a form of "continuous vision" lens, All About Vision explains. This means that some parts of the lens are good for near vision, whereas other parts are designed for far vision; there is no distinct zone for one kind of vision versus the other. This is opposed to bifocal lenses, which have distinct zones for close and distance vision.

Uses

Aspheric contact lenses are good for patients who are both near and far-sighted, as it allows the eyes to be able to focus on objects at many different distances from the eyes. In addition, Vision Rx explains, aspheric lenses can be helpful for patients who are borderline astigmatic.
