Realizing the importance of setting goals is one step toward succeeding in life. Jim Stoval, a motivational speaker and author of "The Ultimate Gift," believes that success requires a passion for pursuing your dreams. Although attaining your goals can take time, Stoval points out that the road to success can be just as rewarding as the achievement itself.

Create a Plan

The first step in setting a goal is in knowing what it is that you want. Keynote speaker Josh Hinds recommends setting goals that support your values and are in line with your enthusiasm for success. Choose realistic goals that can be achieved within a reasonable time frame. Likewise, take on goals that are within your individual capabilities. Setting a measurable goal allows you to continuously gauge your progress, especially when you are working toward a larger goal. If you start out by setting small goals that will move you forward in the direction of accomplishing your greater goal, you may find the road along the way less chaotic. By focusing on just one step at a time, you keep the tasks both manageable and achievable. Taking smaller steps toward your ultimate goal also helps to keep you on course along the way.

Set Priorities

Once you define a goal and determine what it is that you want to accomplish, you need to consider the various options available to you for achieving success. Create in your mind the outcome you want. Next, make a list of all the things that can help you reach your primary objective. When you become fixed on an idea so that your thoughts are directed toward that purpose, commit to following through with actions. Taking action is what really propels you forward to achieve your goals. Jon Gordon, a consultant and author of "The Energy Bus," suggests setting purpose-driving goals. If you focus on your purpose rather than the goal, you may find it easier to formulate your actions into a logical sequence.

Learn From Failure

When something doesn't work out the way you've planned, you haven't failed. You simply need to try again or until you find what does work. Failure is a crucial part of anyone's success. It can prepare you for other challenges that will come your way. Learning from your failure gives you the tools you need to move forward, putting you closer to reaching your goals and achieving success. The Mayo Clinic advises planning for setbacks from the beginning so that you are less likely to be derailed along the way. Evaluate those things that could potentially go wrong and then develop specific strategies on how to deal with the situation if it occurs. Failure gives you the opportunity to reevaluate your strategy and make the necessary changes. Examine the mistakes you've made and then adjust your approach so that you don't make the same mistakes again. By not taking the time to assess your course of action at regular intervals, you are more likely to overlook your mistakes. When you neglect to identify your mistakes, there is a good chance that you might make some of them again.

Keep Motivated

Motivation is generally defined as the ability to begin and then carry on a task, according to "Psychology Today". Your motivation to perform directly impacts the degree of success you achieve. Another critical part of motivation is in believing that you can do it as only you can actually make your dreams happen. The amount of effort you expend must be consistent with the goals you have set for yourself. One key is not to be distracted along the way. Motivation encompasses dedicating yourself to your chief purpose. Be positive throughout the journey and allow yourself to be inspired. Consistently ask yourself if you are doing all that you can to attain your ultimate goal.
