Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, also known as AIDS, is a collection of symptoms that results from contracting the HIV virus. It is often fatal, and conventional medical treatment includes a cocktail of prescription drugs which are designed to attack the virus aggressively. The natural approach to treating autoimmune disorders such as HIV and AIDS includes herbs and other supplements designed to strengthen the body's natural defenses. As most herbs are not yet FDA approved, it is important to consult a health-care professional before trying natural supplements.

History

The term AIDS was first used in the early 1980s. However, blood samples from the Congo from as early 1959 revealed the existence of the HIV virus, says the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. Although several theories exist, the exact genesis of the HIV virus is unknown. It is passed on from someone who is infected with the virus via blood or sexual fluid. It is the HIV virus that is believed to cause the collection of symptoms we recognize as AIDS today.

Conventional Medicine

Medical treatment can be rigorous, and include several anti-retroviral drugs, some of which do have harsh side effects. According to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, it is believed that combining several of these drugs together makes them more effective. The Foundation warns that following this drug regimen does not prevent the spread of AIDS or the HIV virus. Some common side effects of HIV medications are: changes in body fat, high blood sugar, high cholesterol levels, as well as damage to the liver and kidneys. A few natural treatments may help to alleviate some of these symptoms, but should only be used under the direction of a health-care professional who has studied natural supplements and understands their potential interactions.

Natural Solutions

The Clayton College of Natural Health herb guide lists several herbs that are used by herbalists to strengthen the immune system. Alfalfa is a restorative herb that is used to treat anemia and chronic illnesses. The herb guide specifically lists HIV and wasting diseases among its key uses. Other immune-enhancing and restorative herbs found in the guide include: astragalus, also used to increase energy; barley grass, a blood purifier; echinacea, a natural immunostimulant; and wild yam or saw palmetto, both reproductive herbs that are also used for wasting diseases.

The Mind/Body/Spirit Approach

The holistic approach will also include simple methods such as diet modifications and guided meditation. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends that HIV and AIDS patients eat a diet rich in whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, quality proteins and oils, as well as nutritional supplements such as vitamins A, B, C, E, calcium and iron. It also recommends avoiding refined flours and sugar, coffee, alcohol and other substances that impair immune function.

Warning

When including herbs and other natural therapies in an AIDS treatment regimen, it is important to follow an integrative approach using both conventional and natural medicine. Because AIDS is a serious disease, patients should never try to discontinue medical treatment to follow a natural or holistic treatment plan.
