The Nutrisystem weight loss plan is based on the concept of the glycemic index. Foods are rated as high, or low, on the glycemic scale. Low-glycemic foods are slow-releasing carbohydrates and include most fruits and vegetables, meats and whole-grain foods.

A 28-Day Menu Plan

Once you have selected your plan and created a 28-day menu, your chosen foods are delivered to your door within a few days. These include breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. You may still need to buy a few extras at the supermarket, such as salad items and fruit.

Sample Menus

A sample menu could include a muffin for breakfast, chicken and pasta with salad for lunch, and macaroni and cheese for dinner. Dessert could be a chocolate cookie, and snacks might include fresh blueberries.

Options for Vegetarians and Diabetics

There are also vegetarian options and a plan for diabetics. Vegetarian menus include oatmeal or granola for breakfast, and main meals range from black bean tortilla soup, rice and beans, soups and vegetarian pasta dishes, to mushroom risotto and thick-crust pizza.
