Invega, or paliperidone, is a prescription medication used for the treatment of schizophrenia. It is classified as an atypical antipsychotic that acts on two chemicals in the brain, serotonin and dopamine. By balancing the levels of these chemicals, Invega is able to control and reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia, explains Invega.com. Invega has the potential to produce side effects in patients.

Increased Heart Rate

Invega may produce an increase in the heart rate. It may also alter the function of the heart, leading to uneven heartbeats. According to RxList.com, the patient should not use this medication or use it with caution if he is on other medications that have the same effects, such as amiodarone, procainamide, antipsychotics and certain antibiotics. It is important for the patient to inform her physician of her entire medical history.

Tardive Dyskinesia

Tardive dyskinesia is described as repetitive involuntary movements, such as face grimacing, jaw swinging and constant chewing. Invega.com states that the risk of developing this adverse effect and the risk of developing it permanently increases with the length of treatment and the dosage. Tardive dyskinesia may go away partially or completely once the medication is discontinued.

Heat Intolerance

Patients using Invega may develop intolerance to heat. This makes it harder for the body to cool down when it gets very hot, explains PubMed Health. The patient is at an increased risk of dehydrating; he should drink plenty of water and avoid extreme heat. The patient should inform her physician if she plans on exercising or will be exposed to heat.

Dizziness and Drowsiness

Invega may produce dizziness and drowsiness in its users. Patients, in particular the elderly, are at risk of developing a drop in blood pressure when moving too quickly from a lying position to a sitting or standing position. This may lead to feeling dizzy or lightheaded. This side effect may decrease over time; the patient should follow the physician's dosing instructions. Invega.com states that the medication may affect driving ability and the patient should speak with a health care provider before driving or operating heavy machinery.

Insomnia

Insomnia, or trouble sleeping, is another side effect that may occur when the patient starts Invega. As the body adjusts to the drug, this side effect should begin to decline. However, if insomnia persists, the patient should contact a health care provider.

Extrapyramidal Symptoms

Extrapyramidal symptoms, or EPS, are characterized by tremor, restlessness and muscle rigidity. EPS are common side effects seen in patients taking Invega, according to RxList.com. If the patient develops these symptoms, he should inform a physician, who can decide if the medication should be switched.
