With its mild temperatures, sublime coastline and active community, seniors in San Diego can enjoy many activities in California's second-largest city. California is a state dedicated to a lifestyle that nurtures physical activity, expands the mind and is dedicated to good food and the city of San Diego is no exception. There are a variety of social diversions for San Diego's older adult community; all you need to do is determine where your interests lie, try something new and bring your energy and enthusiasm.
Senior Centers
There are fifteen senior centers located throughout the community in neighborhoods such as La Jolla, San Ysidro and Mira Mesa as well as many senior living communities that offer active adults independent living. Many of these communities have golf courses on-site as well as country club facilities such as greenbelts, swimming pools, tennis and bocce ball.
Water and Land Sports
If you're interested in water-related activities, there is no shortage of fishing in this coastal region. From Oceanside, you can experience deep-sea fishing or lake fishing at a number of spots in the Escondido area. If you prefer to keep your feet on land, then enjoy a few rounds of golf at one of the 62 golf courses in San Diego or the various hiking areas near Fallbrook and Carlsbad.
Fitness Classes
Fitness classes build social groups and encourage friendships as well as providing exercise programs to improve balance, stretch muscles and improve circulation. There are a number of classes offered at the community centers that seniors enjoy in a variety of settings, from low-impact aerobics and yoga to belly dancing and line dancing.
Arts and Culture
Cultural activities are plentiful and readily available; from museum outings to visits to artists' studios and wine country tours. Museums range from the Museum of Contemporary Art to the Museum of Man with a focus on anthropological history. For the sports enthusiast, there is the San Diego Hall of Champions. If you enjoy history, visit the Museum of Natural History or the San Diego Historical Society. The Bernardo Winery has been around since 1889 and offers private tours and wine tasting; special event hosting is also available.
Senior Volunteers
San Diego has a wide range of volunteer opportunities for seniors throughout the community. The Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol invites seniors 50 or older to provide assistance in crime patrol. If you have an interest in law enforcement, this offers a chance to be involved with senior groups and be part of providing safety for members of the community. Volunteers are also needed in the community libraries, recreation centers, parks and beaches.
