Located just across the border with Oregon and minutes from Portland, Vancouver, Washington offers residents and visitors spectacular mountain views and clean air. The area's traditionally brisk spring weather begins to turn warm by June, making it a great month to get out and start exploring some of the many healthy outdoor activities and events.
Visit a Museum
The nearby Fort Vancouver National Site lets you explore the area's history including its Native American roots, pioneer days and activities during both World Wars. You can hike across the Vancouver Land Bridge which connects the fort with the Columbia River. The annual Bridge Encampment every June features historical interpreters telling stories of the bridge. The Clark County Historical Museum offers walking tours of the city's key architectural sites during the summer, letting you stretch your legs while learning more about the city.
Shop at a Museum
The Vancouver Farmers' Market is open on weekends at the intersection of Eighth and Esther streets in downtown Vancouver. You can purchase farm-fresh fruits, vegetables, meats and other food from local farmers, allowing you to eat healthy with local ingredients. Local farms such as Bi-Zi Farms allow you to visit them and buy produce directly. Items in season in June include strawberries and cherries.
Shred at a Skate Park
June is the perfect time for you to take out your board and hit a skate parks in Vancouver. The Swift Skatepark opened in 1998 inside Water Works Park and is open for skateboarders and in-line skaters. If you are a big-air specialist, you can take advantage of the large bowl and two smaller bowls while plenty of street furniture is available if you are a street skater. The private-owned Ripzu Skateboard Park is an indoor option for skateboarders only.
Hit the Water
In June, the weather in Vancouver is finally warm enough for you to enjoy some of the water activities the area has to offer. You can swim at the Klineline Pond or fish in the nearby Salmon Creek. If you want to get out onto the water, you can canoe or kayak on Vancouver Lake. You can also take motorized boats and personal watercraft out at locations like Battle Ground Lake or Cedar Creek.
Play Some Sports
If you are an avid beach volleyball player--or just want to hit a ball around with friends--Frenchman's Bar Regional Park offers you eight sand volleyball courts all available free of charge. June is also a great time to reconnect to your childhood and play some kickball. The city sponsors an adult kickball league which is in full swing--and kick--in June for players 14 and older.
