People looking to lose weight are often told that a gradual approach is the way to go. But the truth is people don't want to be thin for the sake of their grandchildren, they want results now. Because of this demand, rapid weight loss diets exist in abundance. Note, however, that as with all forms of self dictated medical intervention, you should clear any diet you choose to undertake with a qualified health professional before getting started.
Frequent Small, Low Fat Meals
One common approach to slimming that is both rapid and effective is to consume four to six meals small meals a day plus snacks rather than the usual three meals without snacks, as going too long between feedings can cause excessive hunger and hence lead to splurging. This approach is likely to result in a change of habits and thus long term weight loss. Meals should be prepared a day in advance to help ensure compliance; minimizing sweets, consuming plenty of fiber, and eating slowly all contribute to the success of this plan.
Cabbage Soup Diet
While there is an admission on the website that this is not a good long-term option for weight loss, the Cabbage Soup Diet is touted as suitable for special occasions on short notice. This diet is to be followed for no more than seven days at a time, with a two-week interval between separate bouts. Dieters can consume soup, fruit and vegetables essentially without restraint, and skim milk, brown rice and beef are allowed on a limited basis.
The Scarsdale Diet
This extremely well-known rapid weight loss plan promises the shedding of 7 to 15 lbs. in a two-week period: the Scarsdale Medical Diet. Then dieters switch to a two-week respite of sorts, known as the Keep Trim Diet, in which participants may eat more calories and a wider variety of foods while still keeping a close eye on moderation. Dieters repeat this cycle as many times as necessary in order to achieve their desired weight. The main difference between the two phases is the amounts consumed rather than the composition.
General Strategies
Some principles of quick weight loss diets are universal. Drinking plenty of water--and not waiting until you feel thirsty to start--is necessary for general good health and helps shuttle nutrients and waste products into and out of cells efficiently; shoot for an ounce of water per day for every two pounds of body weight. Also, loading up on fiber, which is found in abundance in fruits, whole grains and vegetables, not only promotes feeling full but bolsters digestive health and may help prevent colon cancer.
