Hit the Water
Created by Hoover Dam, nearby Lake Mead is a perfect way to beat the heat during the summer. There are plenty of activities for kids to do in or near the water. You can take cooling swim in the lake, go out on the water or a canoe or kayak or go fishing. If you want a more heart-pounding water adventure, the Desert Breeze Park has an aquatic center featuring water slides along with indoor and outdoor swimming pools.
Play Sports
Las Vegas Indoor Soccer gives you the chance to play in a youth indoor soccer league. The facility also has programs for small children along with camps for kids. Or you can learn how to wield an epee at the Fencing Academy of Nevada, which offers training classes for beginners and experts. Youth programs include weekly classes and a summer camp and you can even participate in tournaments.
Feel the Speed
Even if you aren't old enough to get your license, Las Vegas still can offer you plenty of high speed thrills. The Fast Lap indoor kart racing center gives you a chance to strap into a high-performance go-kart which can reach speeds of 50 mph. If you want even more speed thrills, you can ride along in a real race car at the Mario Andretti Racing Experience if you are at least five feet tall and weigh 100 pounds.
Explore the Outdoors
There are plenty of opportunities for you to explore the scenic beauty of the desert area surrounding Las Vegas. You can hike through the canyons near Boulder City to get to the Arizona Hot Springs and enjoy a relaxing soak in the heated mineral water downstream of Ringbolt Rapids. The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers you a range of hiking options and a chance to explore the natural fauna of the area.
See Some Animals
The Southern Nevada Zoo is the only year-round zoo in Nevada and has more than 150 different species of animals and plants on its three-acre complex. You can stroll through the zoo and see endangered big cats along with the only family of Barbary apes in the United States. You can have a unique hands-on animal and plant experience at the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary and Orchard, where you can stroll through the bird refuge and pick and eat fresh fruit growing on the trees inside the orchard.
