Help your children achieve greater success in math by supplementing their learning with a math program. When evaluating software programs, it is critical to make sure that the software is age appropriate, educationally sound, has child appeal and is easy to use. The software you choose can be general or it can target specific areas.
Math & Music Wildridge Education
Math & Music is an interdisciplinary program that is geared for children from grade 7 through high school. It combines math, physics and music in an innovative program, which appeals to music lovers. This program can be purchased for schools or by individuals. The topics include basic division and multiplication, speed math, geometry, trigonometry, the physics of sound and the mathematics of music. The program also includes a history component that explains different number-based systems and prime numbers. The set comes with a one CD Rom, one teacher guide, one textbook, one workbook and one student guide. Extras can be purchased if you are working with multiple children. Soccer Math EdVenture
Soccer players will enjoy learning math as this program combines the game of soccer with math skills. Designed for children ages 7 to 14, this program teaches place values, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, U.S. and metric measurement, greatest common factors, least common multiples, fractions, decimals and percents. The goal of this program is to learn to answer math problems quickly. In doing so, math teachers feel that students will become more confident of their math abilities. Carmen Sandiego Math Detective Riverdeep
Carmen Sandiego, a popular geography software package and TV game show, also has a math program for children ages 8 to 14. This program doesn't completely abandon geography as the detective goes to 12 enemy hideouts and solves math problems to get to the next location. There are three different skill levels. Math areas covered include addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, estimating, converting fractions and decimals, calculating percentages and geometry. Strategies for solving problems are addressed. The system also offers many word based problems. This program works in Windows and Mac environments (See Resources).
Ready for Math With Pooh Disney Interactive
This package is designed for the youngest math learners ages 3 to 6. The basic skills of number recognition, counting, number order, and basic addition and subtraction are featured. Winnie the Pooh and her friends engage in many activities, such as gardening and frosting cupcakes. The program is available for Windows and Mac environments (See Resources).
