Switching from a crib to a bed can be an exciting experience for a kid. But choosing a mattress can be a daunting task for parents. With so many makes, models, colors and styles, it is difficult to know which mattress to choose. Several factors require attention when choosing a mattress for kids, and since your child will be sleeping on the mattress that you choose for many years to come, a quality mattress built to last should be top priority.
Step 1
Measure your child's bed frame to determine the length and width, using a measuring tape. The size of the bed will determine what size mattress it will fit. For instance, a standard twin mattress measures 37 inches by 74 inches, while a full-size mattress measures 54 inches by 74 inches.
Step 2
Examine the bed frame to determine whether it requires a bunkie board or box-spring base. Some mattresses require a specific base for total support. Bunk beds often require a bunkie board, while a standard bed frame better suits a box spring.
Step 3
Research the different kinds of materials that mattresses consist of. Keep in mind that some synthetic materials can give off dangerous toxins. Your child can inhale these toxins. Mattresses made of wool or other natural materials do not emit toxins.
Step 4
Test the mattress before you buy. Have your child lay down on several different mattresses to check the comfort level. A child's mattress should be firm. A firm mattress will sustain your child's body weight and not buckle as he grows.
Tips and Warnings
- Cover your child's mattress with a mattress cover. Doing so will protect it against accidents and other types of stains.
- Do not purchase a kid's mattress based on cost. Just because a mattress costs more, does not make it better. A good warranty, support and composition are most important.
