Whether you have curly hair, wavy hair or chemically damaged hair--you may experience frizz. This is especially true if your hair is dry. High humidity or regular blow-drying can make a frizzy problem worse. Each strand of hair has an outer layer known as the cuticle. According to Ohio State Research, smooth, shiny hair has a straight cuticle. The cuticle of a frizzy hair strand has just the opposite. Proper care and the use of natural products to help smooth the cuticle can rid your hair of frizz and increase luster.

Step 1

Wash your hair using a shampoo that contains natural humectants, which are derived from animal or vegetable fats and lubricate your hair, attract moisture and reduce frizz.

Step 2

Condition frizzy hair after washing. Apply a moisturizing conditioner that also contains natural humectants. Allow the conditioner to sit on your hair for three to five minutes before rinsing it away with cool water.

Step 3

Blot excess water from your hair after rinsing. Use an absorbent towel, which will help to remove as much water as possible. Continue to squeeze and pat your hair with the towel until you have removed as much water as possible.

Step 4

Spray your hair with a leave-in conditioner to coat your hair and reduce frizz. Distribute the leave-in conditioner through your hair using a wide-tooth comb.

Step 5

Air-dry your hair instead of using a blow dryer. Blow-drying strips your hair and scalp of oils. If you have frizzy hair to begin with, this can exacerbate the problem.

Step 6

Apply a natural anti-frizz serum to your hair once it dries. Natural anti-frizz serums contain natural oils, such as grapeseed oil, olive oil or coconut oil that coat the hair cuticle, adding shine and suppressing frizz. A dime-size amount worked into your hair with your fingertips is all that is usually necessary.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you have frizzy hair and normally wash your hair every day, try washing your hair every other day instead. Washing your hair too often strips away natural oils, making frizz worse. If you are in a rush and must blow-dry your hair, use an ionic blow dryer with a diffuser attachment. Ionic blow dryers are less damaging, and a diffuser spreads the heat out, helping to prevent frizz.
  • Blot your hair with the towel; do not rub your hair as you dry it. Rubbing your hair will make a frizzy hair problem worse.
