Kayaking is a fun way to travel through lakes, rivers and oceans, and get yourself a good upper body and cardiovascular workout. Some adventurous souls add to the excitement by surfing with their kayak. Surfing with a kayak can be dangerous if you get tossed upside down inside a wave, but it can also be a lot of fun if you follow some basic steps.

Step 1

Find a friend and use a double sit on top type of kayak if you are just starting out. An extra paddler will make it easier for you to control the kayak until you get some experience.

Step 2

Paddle out into the waves as they are rolling in, according to Atlantic Kayak Tours. Your kayak will be more stable if it is in continuous motion.

Step 3

Paddle out into the water through a few incoming waves, then use your paddle to turn the kayak around. Paddle slowly back toward the shore to get accustomed to the feeling of the waves pushing the kayak.

Step 4

Make a couple of quick paddle strokes once you feel the wave lift the back of the kayak. This will help you ride the wave longer as it pushes you toward the beach.

Step 5

Paddle your kayak backwards when you feel the wave lift it if you want to stop the forward momentum. Paddling backwards will cause the wave to slide right underneath the kayak.

Tips and Warnings

  • Use your paddle to help you stay straight and balance on the waves.
