In order to help young people learn the game of basketball, it's important for coaches to give them drills that help them improve the basics of the game. When you are teaching the game, it's best to explain how the drills work, demonstrate how to do them properly and make corrections as they are done. Keep the drills short so the players' minds do not wander.

Cone Dribbling Drill

Dribbling is one of the most important skills in baseketball. While you may want your players to move the ball by passing it upcourt in games, players who can dribble well can create their own shot and play with confidence. Set up five cones just past the midcourt line. The cones should be about five feet apart. Have the player dribble past midcourt and then go to the right of the first cone, the left of the second cone, the right of the third cone and then continue in that manner.

Up the Court Passing Drill

In this drill, three players start out under their own baseline. The player in the middle starts with the ball. He passes the ball to the player on his right as they begin to move upcourt at half-speed. The player on the right passes to the player on the far left, who then passes to the player in the middle. Keep going in this manner until one of the wing players gets in position to take a layup. Then run the same drill going back up the court. This helps player learn to catch the ball on the run and shoot a layup.

Shooting 101

This drill is done with two players at a time. Player A starts with the ball under the basket. Player B picks out a point about 10 to 12 feet away from the basket. Player A passes it to player B who shoots, and follows his shot. Player B gets the rebounds and then passes it to player A, who spots up for his shot. Continue in this manner until each player has taken 10 shots. Keep track of each player's progress at every practice session.
