The time comes in every child's life when you must to tie your shoes. Some kids catch on really quickly, and others seem to take forever. Teaching a child to tie his shoes is a good way to make him feel self reliant and give him a sense of responsibility, says Dr. Robyn Silverman, a child and teen development expert, on her website. Keeping the instruction basic, and showing patience every step of the way will help him master his shoe-tying skills even faster.
Step 1
Obtain a pair of shoelaces that are different colors. This way, you can just refer to a color, rather than left and right.
Step 2
Buy shoelaces that are slightly fatter than normal, if possible, advises Ian's Shoelace Site. This will make it easier for her to grip the laces. Also, opt for a cotton, or other natural lace to prevent slipping.
Step 3
Demonstrate how to make the classic "bunny ears" shoelace configuration. Make an "X" with the laces, then bring one lace through the bottom of the "X" and pull them tight.
Step 4
Make two loops with the laces so they resemble bunny ears. Cross the ears into an "X" then loop one ear underneath the "X" and pull them tightly together.
Step 5
Place the shoe on a table, so he can concentrate on the finger movements and process without having to bend over. Practice this way until he gets it right most of the time, then put the shoe on his foot.
Tips and Warnings
