Weight loss is a profitable business due to the high rate of obesity. There are so many weight loss pills, books and programs that it can be overwhelming to choose the right plan for you. Do not go out and spend your life savings on every "fad diet" on the market. Instead take a look at the lifestyle changes that you can make to help you lose weight.
Eat Healthier
Eating foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish and lean meats will help you lose weight and become healthier. Andrea Wenger Hess, a nutritionist at the University of Maryland's Joslin Diabetes Center suggests limiting the amount of saturated fats, cholesterol and refined sugars you are consuming, in addition to eating healthier foods.
Eat Small Frequent Meals
Rather than eating three large meals a day have five to six smaller meals. According to Pamela Peek, M.D. and assistant clinical professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, the body needs food about every three hours. You should try to eat a healthy snack like yogurt, fruit or soy cheese every two to three hours to prevent hunger.
Eat Slowly
It takes around 20 minutes before your brain realizes that you are full, states Wenger Hess. The amount of calories you eat until you feel full depends on how fast you are eating. When you slow down and savor each bite, you can prevent the consumption of unneeded calories.
Find a Support System
Having a support system can give you the encouragement you need to lose weight. Friends and family are a great support system, especially if they are working with you to lose weight. If you do not have a support system in place at home consider joining a support group to keep you motivated.
Ban Soda
According to HelpGuide.org soda is the largest source of calories in the American diet, consisting of about 7 percent of your daily calories. One can of soda contains 10-12 tsp. of sugar and close to 150 calories. You can lose weight simply by cutting soda and other sugary drinks from your diet. Instead of drinking soda, try drinking water and lemon, ice tea (unsweetened), or mix a small amount of your favorite juice with carbonated water.
Get Enough Sleep
Getting enough sleep each night is a big factor for weight loss. When you do not get enough sleep you are at a higher risk of being overweight, according to Helpguide.com. Generally you should aim for a full eight hours, but you may need more or less.
Exercising
Exercise is a critical part of any weight loss program. Doing cardiovascular exercise like swimming, running or biking helps you to burn calories. According to MayoClinic.com you should aim for 30 minutes of exercise a day. The more exercise you do, the more calories you burn. Adding strength training to your workouts will help you build muscle. MayoClinic.com states that muscles burn more calories than fat.
