Omega-3 fatty acids can have profound impacts on memory, metabolism, and heart health across the lifespan. Omega-3 fats comprise over 8 percent of the brain's mass, assist in developing new neural connections that help make learning more efficient, improve the effectiveness of your child's dentist, and can even improve the immune system of your children.

Fish Oil Basics

Fish oil is composed of two primary active ingredients known as EPA and DHA. Each nutrient plays an integral role in the health of a number of the body's systems including the brain, heart, lungs, blood, and endocrine system, says Dr. Jonny Bowden, a clinical nutritionist. Supplementation of fish oil is a common practice and one that should be considered throughout the lifespan as the traditional Western diet is devoid of Omega-3 fatty acid sources.

Fish Oil and Brain Health

Omega-3 fats found in fish oil comprise approximately 8% of the brain's total weight and plays a profound role in its functions. Fish oil has been associated with improvements in learning, memory, and intelligence. Research conducted on pregnant mothers demonstrated that those who consume the least amount of Omega-3 fats have children who are 48 percent more likely to score in the lowest quartile on IQ testing, demonstrating the value in fish oil supplementation during pregnancy. Fish oil has also been associated with improved attention and decreased impulsive behavior in those with ADHD, says Bowden.

Fish Oil and the Immune System

Supplementation of fish oil in early life plays a valuable role in the development of a strong immune system that helps ward off illnesses. Research by Dr. Phillip Calder of the University of Southhampton's Institute of Developmental Sciences demonstrated that early life Omega-3 consumption is associated with decreased occurrences of allergies and immune system.

Fish Oil and Dental Health

Fish oil consumption can help your child reduce the incidence of cavities and oral infections. Omega 3 fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA, have shown promise in preventing dental infections and inflammation by preventing the buildup of excessive bacteria in the mouths of children, which can cause premature tooth decay and infection.

Practical Strategies

Optimize your child's Omega-3 consumption by adding supplemental fish oil in the form of liquid or capsule format for ideal purity says Bowden. Shoot for a minimum of 1g of combined EPA and DHA daily, which is usually about 3 tsp of fish oil in liquid form. Avoid the fish belches by consuming fish oil with a meal. As with any nutritional supplement, be sure to consult your pediatrician before beginning a supplement program.
