Alli Diet Pills' Side Effects

Alli, commonly known as Orlistat, is an over-the-counter diet pill that purports to help users lose weight. It works by stopping the body's absorption of excess fat intake. One pill is recommended to be taken with each meal, and each pill contains over 15 g of fat per serving. Once the pill is swallowed, its contents are released into the gastrointestinal system to work on trapping fat and then eliminating it through the rectum.

Gas

One of the most common side effects of Alli is gas, which is caused from excess air that is trapped in the stomach. Some people experience gas or belching within the first hour after taking Alli. Gas can also develop in the colon and be released through the rectum.

Oily Spotting

Another common side effect to Alli is passing an oily discharge. It can commonly occur after taking Alli and eating a high-fat meal such as a cheeseburger or fried egg. Alli users should be aware that this can be a very embarrassing and bothersome side effect. Keeping a change of clothes or a clean pair of underwear close by is recommended.

Loose Stools

Having loose stools or diarrhea is another Alli side effect. These stools usually occur a few hours after eating a meal---even a low-fat meal. Alli usually softens most stools even if the stools are not runny or loose in the first place. Drinking plenty of water and getting the daily recommended amount of exercise will help combat loose stools and promote healthy bowel movements.

Abdominal Discomfort

Abdominal discomfort is another reported Alli side effect. This could manifest in the form of cramping, trapped gas, rumbling gas and even mild pain just before a bowel movement. These symptoms generally only persist after a really high-fat meal of over 15 g of fat. If severe pain persists, stop using the pills and seek medical care.

Weight Loss

One of the most positive side effects to using Alli regularly and correctly is weight loss. Alli's manufacturer claims that taking the pills, combined with a healthy change in lifestyle habits such as eating a low-fat diet and engaging in daily exercise, will help increase weight loss. According to the Alli website, most Alli users can expect to lose 1 to 2 lbs. a week.
